Predominant.ly

Predominant.ly allows visitors to browse music by album color. Using the iTunes database for albums and genres, and XKCD’s list of human-named colors, visitors can browse freely by selecting a color from the gradient field, or methodically by selecting genre/color pairs like ‘Razzmatazz Jazz’ or ‘Green Blues’.

This project is a reaction to the sort/filter/search interfaces that have come to dominate music streaming services. It seeks to bring an element of serendipity back into the search for music and creates an opportunity to hear something apart from that which we already know we like.

It is also an exercise in designing distinct digital interfaces that are specific to their content rather than implementations of standard UI elements.

This project is a collaboration with Atelier Carvalho Bernau
