The IPK is a collaboration with Nathaniel Tkacz, an academic at Warwick University. We worked alongside Nate as the design partner in his research project that was concerned with the proliferation of dashboards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in political, personal, financial, and even educational contexts.
The Index works by building a corpus of data from academic abstracts, then using a simple grammar that follows the linguistic pattern of KPIs, an endless stream of Keys can be generated. The IPK becomes a dashboard that displays the very essence of dashboards. It measures the measurability of things. It monitors the world’s susceptibility to performance management.
Alongside the website, a book was published to catalogue a portion of the results. Other printed material was also designed for a concluding conference.
